Luna moth (Actias luna) caterpillars actively consume Rhus trilobata, also known as 3-leaf sumac.

Cocoons, early June 2021. This group will hatch in a few weeks and if the adults mate, the process can start over. Late summer cocoons will go into the refrigerator until the following spring (and kept at approximately 38 to 40 degrees F.)

I love learning about art, music, science, and history. I attended Tyler School of Art (Temple University) in the 1970s, and then spent many years as a prototype sculptor for the fine gift industry. Recently I went back to college and graduated in 2025 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Liberal Arts from Northern Arizona University.
